Schoorl is a village in the Netherlands that is known for its beautiful dunes

Schoorl is located in the province of North Holland in the Netherlands. It is a small village with a population of only 4,500 people. Schoorl is most famous for its beautiful dunes, which offer hikers some stunning views of the Dutch coastline.

Besides hiking, the mountain biking route in Schoorl is one of the most intensive one in the Netherlands. This means, when you go for your walk here, there are some spots you need to look out for crossing mountain bikers. Their route is detached for most part except some crossings.

The Schoorl Dunes hike offers picturesque views of the Dutch coastline

There are multiple routes you can walk here, this Saturday morning we walked the blue route. It is about 10 km long and takes you on the beach, unlike most routes here.

The dunes are about 5km wide in this part of the Netherlands, this is the largest natural sea protection in the Netherlands. Schoorl is also the first village in the Netherlands that was created with dunes in mind. The Schoorl Dunes are the highest and widest dunes of the Netherlands.

The hike is about 10 kilometers long and takes around 3-4 hours to complete

Route options in Schoorl

There are many more options, with a total range from 5 to 22 km. The blue route we took was nice because we went on the beach, but for a large part this meant it was also hard to walk. When you get closer to the beach and exit the forest, there is quite some loose sand to walk through. This can make it quite tiring to walk on and will cost a lot of energy.

There are several different routes you can take on the hike, so be sure to plan ahead

As said, the options range from 5 tot about 22 km for the routes. What is important here that only two of the routes will go over the beach and when you are in low season, the beach café is not there. This means you’ll need to pack all your own food and drinks for most of the time here. You will not encounter any restaurant or café.

Wear sturdy shoes and dress appropriately for the weather

This is definitely not a hike to do in your flip flops. The Schoorl Dunes are made out of sand, which means it can get pretty hot during summer days. Make sure to bring sunscreen, a hat and enough water (at least 1.5L per person).

I would also recommend bringing a windbreaker or light rain jacket. The weather can change quite rapidly here, going from sunny to cloudy within minutes. And when the wind picks up, it can get chilly quite fast as well since most of the walk you are in the open. Here are some more recommendations.
